Scotland Cultural Book
Editorial Course Project
The Braemar Gathering: Scotland, the Highland Games, and the Braemar Gathering is a cultural book focusing on the rich Scottish culture surrounding the Cairngorms and Braemar area, traditional tartan pattern and kilts, and the Highland games. This book is the culmination of my editorial design course. A goal of mine for this project was to push myself out of my usual aesthetic by using Adobe Photoshop to edit photography and create collages using ephemera of the Braemar Gathering from the games' official archive.
Concept Development
Taking inspiration from the thin columns of fashion magazines and the collage feeling of what you would find in a family scrapbook, the idea for this cultural book was truly brought to life after finding the official Braemar Gathering’s archive of photographs of game results,
news snippets, attendees, and the games themselves.
I balanced the images and Scottish ephemera with plenty of whitespace, to draw the viewers to the imagery that supported the copy. To tie everything together, I created illustrations of Scottish iconography and Highland Games events that I vectorized with Adobe Illustrator and placed into the book.
